Cyprus, Greece or Malta? Choosing your Mediterranean move
Three sun-soaked options, three quite different lives. For north Londoners drawn to the eastern and central Mediterranean, the choice between Cyprus, Greece and Malta is less about the weather — all three deliver — and more about language, pace and the kind of community you want around you.
Cyprus: familiar and connected
Cyprus is the softest landing of the three for many British movers. English is widely spoken, the island drives on the left, and — particularly for north London’s large Cypriot community — there are often deep family roots to move back toward.
It suits people who want warmth and ease without a steep adjustment: retirees, British-Cypriot families, and remote workers drawn by the climate. Paphos and Limassol anchor the established communities; the Troodos villages offer the quieter, more traditional island.
Greece: culture and slowness
Greece rewards those after depth — a mainland of history and mountain towns, a serious capital, and islands with real individual character. The trade-off is that it asks a little more adjustment: the language, the bureaucracy and, on the islands, the seasonal rhythm.
It draws downshifters, creatives and Greek-heritage families. Crete is large enough for a full year-round life; the Ionian islands like Corfu have long-settled British communities; the Peloponnese offers unhurried mainland living within reach of Athens.
Malta: English-speaking and compact
Malta is the practical pick: English is an official language, it’s in the EU, it drives on the left, and the whole archipelago is small enough to know quickly. That combination makes it one of the easiest Mediterranean moves for a UK household to absorb.
It suits professionals in finance and maritime, retirees wanting minimal friction, and families after a compact, safe, sunny base. Sliema and St Julian’s are the modern coastal core; Gozo is the greener, slower alternative.
The practical view
All three are island moves, which means a sea leg and a little more planning than a mainland relocation. Cyprus and Malta share the reassurance of left-hand driving and widespread English; Greece asks more but arguably gives more in return.
