Spain, Italy or Portugal? Choosing your Mediterranean move
Three southern options, three quite different lives. For north Londoners drawn to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast, the choice between Spain, Italy and Portugal is less about weather than about what kind of daily life you want at the other end — and, in practical terms, what the building you are moving into will let us do.
Spain: established and well-served
Spain is the softest landing of the three for most British movers. The expatriate infrastructure is mature, the coastal communities are long-established, and there are more direct flights back to London than from anywhere else on this list. Administratively it is well-trodden ground: the NIE, the padrón and the consular deregistration are a familiar sequence rather than a mystery.
It suits people who want warmth without a steep adjustment: retirees, families relocating for work to Madrid or Barcelona, and remote workers drawn by the climate. The practical catch is urban housing — a fourth-floor flat with a retro-fitted lift is the Spanish norm, and the lift is frequently too small for a sofa.
Italy: depth and older buildings
Italy rewards those after texture — a country of regional identities, serious food culture and cities that have been lived in continuously for two thousand years. The trade-off is that it asks more of you administratively, and considerably more of the people moving your furniture.
It draws professionals to Milan and Turin, and families to Tuscany, Umbria and the lakes. The thing to understand before you commit is access: historic centres run restricted traffic zones with real enforcement, stairs are stone and tight, and door heads were cut before mass-produced furniture existed. Some pieces genuinely will not go in.
Portugal: quieter and further
Portugal is the calm pick. English is widely spoken in the Algarve and the cities, the pace is gentler than Spain’s costas, and the Atlantic coast has a different character entirely from the Mediterranean. The NIF comes first in the paperwork and the rest follows in a reasonably orderly way.
It suits retirees, downshifters and families wanting space. It is also the longest drive we do, which matters more than people expect: everything about how your things are packed follows from the length of the run rather than the destination. Lisbon and Porto add a second consideration — hill streets where a long vehicle simply cannot stop.
The practical view
All three are road moves, which is the reason they are the three we run. One vehicle, one crew, loaded in Barnet and unloaded at your door, with nothing transferred at a port or held in a depot waiting for a container to fill. Spain and Portugal share the long-haul packing standard; Italy is the one where access at the far end does most of the deciding.
Whichever way you lean, the logistics are ours to solve. We run all three routes from Barnet regularly and will talk you through the practical realities of each before you commit to anything.
